1 Bay, 2 Bays, 3 Bays… How Shop Shelving Can Be Built to Almost Any Length
One of the questions we regularly get asked at Proshelf is: “How long can I make a run of retail shop shelving?”
The simple answer is – pretty much as long as you need it.
Most commercial shop shelving systems are designed to be modular. This means you can start with a single bay and then continue adding bays one after another until you've created the length required for your store.
Whether you need a single unit for a small corner shop or long runs of gondola shelving for a complete supermarket or convenience store fit-out, the same basic principle applies.
What is a Bay of Shop Shelving?
A bay is essentially one section of shelving.

The first bay normally acts as your starting section. Additional bays can then be connected to it to extend the shelving run.
So you could have:
1 bay → 2 bays → 3 bays → 4 bays → 5 bays → and keep going...
This makes modular retail shelving incredibly flexible. Instead of trying to find one large shelving unit that perfectly matches the length of your wall or floor space, you simply build your shelving run using individual bays.
If your shop layout changes in the future, the system can also be altered, extended or rearranged.
Single-Sided Wall Shelving
Single-sided shop shelving is normally positioned against the walls of a store.
You can start with one bay and add further bays alongside it to create a continuous run around your shop. This could be a couple of metres in a small retail unit or a much longer run around the perimeter of a convenience store or supermarket.
Shelves can then be positioned at different heights depending on the products you're displaying.
It's a simple system, but the flexibility is one of the reasons this style of retail shelving is used in so many different types of shops.
Double-Sided Gondola Shelving

The same idea applies to double-sided gondola shelving.
Rather than sitting against a wall, double-sided shelving is normally used in the centre of a shop to create aisles.
Products can be displayed on both sides, making excellent use of the available floor space.
Again, you aren't restricted to a fixed length. Bays can be added one after another to create an aisle that suits the size and layout of your store.
A small convenience store might only require a few bays, while a larger supermarket, discount store or retail outlet could require considerably longer runs.
End bays and promotional displays can also be added to the ends of gondola runs to make use of additional selling space.
Shelving Designed Around Your Shop – Not the Other Way Around
This is one of the biggest advantages of modular shop shelving and shop fittings.
Every shop is different.

Some stores are long and narrow. Others have large open floor areas. There may be pillars, doorways, windows, counters and other obstacles that need to be taken into consideration.
Being able to add individual shelving bays means the layout can be designed around the space you actually have available.
At Proshelf, we can supply shelving for anything from a small independent retailer requiring just a handful of bays through to a complete shop fit-out requiring hundreds of bays of shelving.
